Ethiopia returns seized jumbo tusks to Kenya

Ethiopia this week handed over to Kenya more than three dozen elephant tusks seized 18 months ago from smugglers in a border town — one of the largest hauls of illegal ivory in recent years, Kenyan wildlife officials said. It is suspected that the 37 tusks were cut from 50 elephants killed in northern Kenya last year.

An act of desperation

It was, the Israelis insisted to the UN Security Council when not invoking Osama bin Laden, a small thing: a limited strike not aimed at Syria at all. But the international outcry against the deepest Israeli raid into Syria for 30 years, accompanied by warnings of escalation, will not displease Prime Minister Ariel Sharon.

Arrow Boys a thorn in LRA’s side

A new militia in eastern Uganda’s Teso region — recently the target of civilian attacks by the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) — is having more success fighting the insurgents than the country’s conventional armed forces have had in the past 17 years. The so-called ”Arrow Boys” have apparently restored a semblance of order.

Syria’s options limited

Syria’s youthful president sounded resolute and defiant this week in his first public comment on the Israeli air raid that struck deep into his country’s territory. ”We can, with full confidence, say that what happened will only make Syria’s role more effective and influential,”’ Bashar al-Assad told the pan-Arab newspaper al-Hayat.

Boks: No cause for optimism

The new millennium has not been kind to the Springboks and, let’s be blunt, there is no cause for optimism over the 2003 Rugby World Cup. After the false dawn of 2002 when, under new coach Rudolf Straeuli, the Boks played thrilling rugby (but still lost three out of four games) the 2003 season has been an unmitigated disaster.

Remember Cameroon vs Argentina, the first game of the 1990 soccer World Cup in Italy? Or Senegal vs France, the opening clash of the 2002 World Cup? Now let’s look ahead to Argentina vs Australia in Sydney on Friday. Initially I thought a Puma-ling might be on the cards … but now I’m not so sure.
