Police were called to the home of Frank Bruno on Monday as medics tried to treat the British former world heavyweight boxing champion. Bruno admitted last month he had received treatment at the Priory clinic in Essex following his divorce from his wife, but denied having a drink or drugs problem.

BMW Williams driver Ralf Schumacher has recovered from a training accident and expects to be behind the wheel again on Sunday at the crucial Indianapolis formula one race. The 28-year-old German, younger brother of world champion Michael Schumacher, suffered a concussion during a September 2 training crash.

Pakistan welcomed South Africa’s decision on Tuesday to proceed with a shortened cricket tour, saying their cancellation at the weekend had created ”hard times” for Pakistani cricket.

A shortened cricket tour of Pakistan by the South African cricket team will go ahead, Cricket SA (Pty) Ltd announced on Tuesday. The cricket board decided to go ahead with the tour after the removal of Karachi and Peshawar from a revised tour schedule and the shortening of the tour’s duration.

Former Australian Test bowler Terry Alderman has urged cricket authorities to consider a new approach to help developing cricket nations lift their standard. He wants former star players in stronger countries who were no longer needed by their own teams to play in sides such as Zimbabwe and Bangladesh.

Pakistan cricket officials have voiced hope that South Africa would reschedule their cricket tour called off over security fears in Karachi last week. A meeting of the South African Cricket management committee has been called to discuss a revised Pakistan tour schedule that scraps matches in Karachi and Peshawar.

Only one match will be played in Johannesburg in the initial stages of the 2003 Coca Cola Cup soccer competition to be played in the first two weeks of October. Premier Soccer League boss Trevor Phillips said the Coca Cola Cup, which Jomo Cosmos won last season, would be much more competitive this year.

As the government works out how to provide anti-retrovirals (ARVs) to people infected with HIV/Aids, health professionals are putting forward a strong case for combining HIV programmes and those dealing with tuberculosis (TB). In South Africa more than half of all TB patients are also infected with HIV/Aids.
