SA revolts against high phone charges

South African telephone subscribers, enraged by high rates charged by fixed-line provider Telkom, are turning on the government and on Telkom. Analysts attack Telkom regularly, complaining of high charges, especially for access to the internet, and warn that this could obstruct South Africa from achieving targeted annual growth of 6% from 2010.

Critics round on England after latest collapse

England’s cricketers are under siege after a dismal series of performances in Australia evoked stinging criticism from opponents, media and even their own fans. The tourists had already been slammed after losing the Ashes to Australia 5-0, but they plumbed new lows with a 90-run loss to New Zealand in the one-day series.

Lebanon looks to aid conference for help

Lebanon’s political and economic crisis takes centre stage at an international aid conference on Thursday, with the country’s Western-backed leaders hoping anti-government protests don’t scare away the donors. Prime Minister Fouad Siniora has said Lebanon needs billions of dollars to help shore up its debt-riddled finances and to recover from last year’s war.

Sharapova fined over father’s coaching

Maria Sharapova was fined  000 after her father coached her from the sidelines during her Australian Open quarterfinal win over Anna Chakvetadze, officials said on Thursday. The top seed received the fine after getting a code violation from Portuguese umpire Mariana Alves during Wednesday’s match because of her father’s behaviour.

Gidani prepares for national lottery

Gidani is continuing its preparations to operate the national lottery despite a legal challenge from Uthingo. ”We continue to assert that we won the license to operate the national lottery from 1 April 2007 in a thorough, scrupulous and well-managed, fair contest,” Gidani chairperson Bongani Khumalo wrote in a statement.
