Wireless broadband provider iBurst has struck a deal with listed telecommunications company Datapro and consumer-focused ISP @lantic Internet Services, the company said on Wednesday. iBurst has a subscriber base of almost 30Â 000 and this has the potential to grow significantly with the partnership.

The JSE was just managing to keep its head above water in noon trade on Wednesday after a choppy morning’s trade on which stronger world markets and lower precious metals prices vied for supremacy. By 12.03pm, the all-share index was up 0,08%. Industrials and financials climbed 0,29% and 0,47% respectively, but the banks index lost 0,51%.

German stock market operator Deutsche Boerse on Wednesday said it had withdrawn its takeover offer for pan-European rival Euronext. The German operator had been battling to convince its Paris-based rival of the logic of a tie-up in the face of a rival takeover offer, preferred by Euronext management, from the New York Stock Exchange.

The Zambian government has appealed to the supreme court to allow the deportation of a British writer who has been accused of defaming President Levy Mwanawasa, an official said on Wednesday. The government initially ordered that Roy Clarke be deported after he called Mwanawasa ”Mawelewele” or a ‘fool’.

England coach Duncan Fletcher said on Wednesday he hoped the Test career of Marcus Trescothick was not finished after the senior opening batsman quit the Ashes tour and flew home with a recurrence of a stress-related illness. Asked whether Trescothick pulling out meant the end of his Test career, Fletcher replied: ”That’s very difficult to say; I hope not.”
