Millions of children across the world will continue to suffer from lack of food, healthcare and education as long as their mothers are forced to live with abusive conditions at home and discrimination in the workplace, according to a major new study released at the United Nations on Monday.

The long arms of the world’s tallest man saved two dolphins in north-east China by reaching inside them to remove plastic they had swallowed, state media reported on Thursday. The dolphins at an aquarium in Fushun, Liaoning province, had fallen sick after swallowing the plastic from the edge of their pool.

The total number of liquidations recorded for the first eleven months of 2006 decreased by 8,9% compared with the first eleven months of 2005, Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) reported on Thursday. The aggregated total of the number of liquidations (2Â 760) for the eleven months is the lowest compared with the same period for the years 2000 until 2006, Stats SA said.

A band of gunmen wearing military uniforms descended on a commercial street in the centre of Baghdad on Thursday and kidnapped dozens of merchants in a brazen daylight raid. Witnesses and security officials said about 100 gunmen wearing military uniforms and driving about 20 silver sports utility vehicles grabbed between 40 and 50 people.

United States actor Peter Boyle, best known for playing the irritable father in the television comedy series Everybody Loves Raymond, has died at the age of 71, his publicist announced. Boyle died on December 12 in a New York hospital after a long battle with multiple myeloma and heart disease, his publicist said.

United States President George Bush says the enemy in Iraq is ”far from being defeated”, but he vows not to be rushed into adjusting his strategy and is giving little indication that he intends to veer sharply from the direction his war policies have taken. ”We’re not going to give up,” Bush said at the Pentagon on Wednesday.
