The 12th session of the Conference of Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change came to an end in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi, recently with little mention of cleaner sources of energy. This was troubling, given the huge potential for such energy sources in Africa — and the fact that a third of the world’s population currently has no access to electricity.

Bongani, resplendent in a tailored suit in brilliant white, alighted from a white Mercedes Benz adorned with golden ribbons. By his side appeared Sipho in a black suit and elegant yellow silk necktie. It was their wedding day. On Saturday December 2 they became the first gay couple to be legally married in a religious ceremony in South Africa, and on the continent of Africa.

Metrorail train driver Mervyne Matthee received both psychiatric and psycho-therapy, as well as medication for complications in his bereavement over the death of his wife, the Paarl Regional Court heard on Monday. Matthee’s trial on 10 charges of culpable homicide resumed before magistrate Anna-Marie Immelman, with forensic scientist David Klatzow as her assessor.

Labour Minister Membathisi Mdladlana announced on Monday that his department will inject almost R100-million into Limpopo’s skills development fund. The announcement was made after a national launch on Saturday, spokesperson Mokgadi Pela said. ”All the provinces were allocated a portion of money totalling nearly R1-billion.”

Prime Minister Tony Blair opted to keep a British nuclear arsenal well into the 21st century on Monday, saying the government planned to order new nuclear-armed submarines to replace its existing fleet. But in a concession to dozens of legislators in his Labour Party who oppose spending billions of pounds on a new nuclear-weapons system, Blair said Britain would cut its nuclear warheads by 20%.

A 45-year-old woman died after being attacked by a swarm of bees at her home near Sodwana in northern KwaZulu-Natal on Monday, police said. Superintendent Jay Naicker said Zodwa Sikhosana and another woman were sitting in her house at Mbazwana at about 2.45pm when a swarm of bees flew into the house and attacked them.
