The allegations against Mbulelo Goniwe are but a horsefly on the ass of the ANC, says Smuts Ngonyama. ”Mistakes do happen,” he said this week, ”but that does not mean that will change the image of the party. The party is too big to be affected by one person’s mistakes.” Apparently one person by the name of Jacob Zuma has been forgotten.

Metered-taxi drivers would like the government to get involved with the development of their industry too, as it did with minibus taxis.

Torrential rains continued to pound southern Somalia on Wednesday, exacerbating devastating floods as the death toll soared to 73 with reports of 21 more drowning deaths, officials said. Local officials in Somalia’s Middle Shabelle, Middle Juba and Lower Juba regions said the 21 people had died when rivers burst their banks.

Most Western and developing nations in the United Nations nuclear watchdog tentatively agreed on Wednesday to shelve Iran’s request for aid to a nuclear project over fears it could yield bomb-grade plutonium, diplomats said. But the deal left open the possibility of revisiting Iran’s case later.

European Union observers on Wednesday commended the good conduct of weekend parliamentary and municipal elections held in Mauritania after a military coup, saying there were no major irregularities. ”The elections were carried out in … a free, open and fair political environment,” said Marie-Anne Isler Beguin, head of the EU’s election observation mission.

Provincial premiers have been offered R1-billion between them for skills-development programmes but none seem to be interested in picking up the cheques, said the Department of Labour on Wednesday. Department spokesperson Mokgadi Pela said the R1-billion National Skills Fund Strategic Projects are being launched in Dutywa in the Eastern Cape on December 2.
