De Beers agrees to settle US lawsuits

De Beers, the world’s largest producer of diamonds, on Wednesday said it has agreed to pay -million to settle four United States class-action lawsuits that accused it of overcharging. The settlement ends 11 years of litigation and ”the majority of civil class actions filed against De Beers in the US,” the company said.

Mugabe blames Britain for Aids-drug shortage

Zimbabwe’s President Robert Mugabe on Wednesday blamed former colonial ruler Britain for ”compromising” his country’s battle against HIV/Aids by trying to block anti-Aids funds from global organisations. ”We have suffered further setbacks through the unjustified British-led international demonisation of our country,” he said.

Lack of food hampers Kenyan ARV programme

But ARV recipients also need enough, good food, without which ARVs cannot work properly.

SA ‘accepting Aids as reality’

Nearly half of South Africans aged 15 and older find nothing wrong with marrying an HIV-positive person and would not have a problem having sex with them. This is according to the Second South African HIV Prevalence, Incidence, Behaviour and Communications Survey released on Wednesday, on the eve of World Aids Day.

Bush defends Iraq war policy

United States President George Bush, facing growing doubts about his war strategy, said on Wednesday that Iraqi troops are increasingly taking the lead in battle, but that ”this will take time and patience”. In a speech defending his policy, Bush said Iraqi forces have made substantial progress in the past year.
