ANCYL national conference set for 2008

The African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) announced on Friday it will hold its national conference in March 2008, at which it will elect its new leaders. President Fikile Mbalula said this is to ensure that the current executive members have an influence on the outcome of the ANC elections, where a new president will be chosen during the ANC national conference in December 2007.

Sanco experiences trying times

The leadership of the South African National Civic Organisation (Sanco) is experiencing a communication breakdown, Sanco deputy president Ruth Bhengu said on Thursday. ”We have not met since yesterday [Wednesday],” Bhengu said. Sanco’s fourth national conference at the University of the Free State was adjourned on Wednesday, its second day.

Mbeki stresses importance of traditional leaders

The institution of traditional leadership occupies a unique and important place in South Africa as it is a critical player in reconstruction and development of the country, President Thabo Mbeki said on Thursday. ”The national Cabinet and I are inspired by the historic position taken by our traditional leaders to work together in harmony with our elected leaders,” Mbeki said.

NGO body: Israel missed chance to learn from Tutu

Israel has missed an opportunity to learn from a man of peace and integrity in blocking a United Nations mission led by Archbishop Desmond Tutu, the South African Non-Governmental Organisation (Sangoco) said on Wednesday. He would have shown Israelis the path to justice, peace and reconciliation, as his role in South Africa demonstrated, said Sangoco president Dolos Luka.

Analyst predicts UDF person as ANC victor

A member of the old United Democratic Front (UDF) senior leadership may emerge as a strong and even winning candidate in the succession struggle in the African National Congress (ANC), political analyst Frederik van Zyl Slabbert predicts.
