Lance Armstrong trained harder for his second marathon, and it showed. The retired seven-time Tour de France champion improved his time by 13 minutes at the New York City Marathon on Sunday, and didn’t have to battle shin splints. ”I enjoyed it much more this year,” said Armstrong.

The characteristics and qualities needed for leadership in the ANC have been much discussed by many inside and outside the party, including in forums such as the Mail & Guardian. Never before has an organisation received such wide-ranging advice. So, in a biblical sense, Kugqityiwe (it is finished). The African National Congress (ANC) is prepared to use the police, the National Prosecuting Authority and the Public Protector to silence dissent in the media and the opposition, Democratic Alliance leader Helen Zille said on Saturday. Zille said state institutions were not fulfilling their mandate and being manipulated by the ANC in pursuit of its own political agenda.

Six world powers meet on Friday to discuss imposing a third round of sanctions on Iran because of its refusal to stop enriching uranium, which they suspect could be used to build nuclear weapons. More than R7-billion later the Coega Development Corporation appears to be close to securing its first anchor tenant. The Mail & Guardian has learned that PetroSA chief executive Sipho Mkhize and department of minerals and energy director general Sandile Nogxina were set to visit the CDC late this week to discuss housing PetroSA’s mooted R39-billion crude-oil refinery.

The Turkish army on Wednesday said it killed 15 Kurdish separatists near the Iraqi border, as ministers discussed possible economic sanctions against Iraq’s autonomous Kurdish government. The latest fighting took place in the Cudi Mountains in Sirnak province, where helicopters and artillery have been pounding Kurdish rebels since Monday.

KwaZulu-Natal opposition parties on Wednesday accused the ruling African National Congress of ignoring the wishes of the residents of Matatiele and forging ahead with the district’s incorporation into the Eastern Cape. The Democratic Alliance (DA) accused the ANC of ”totally ignoring the wishes of the people of Matatiele Maluti”.
