An American Airlines Boeing 737 overshot the runway in Kingston, Jamaica on Tuesday night, but the company said there were no fatalities.
The world’s top airlines warned on Thursday that soaring fuel prices were hitting profits, prompting some to increase fares, and global leader American Airlines announced thousands of job cuts to counter higher costs. Airline stocks fell sharply in Asia and Europe after stock in American’s parent AMR shed a quarter of their value as investors fretted over the cost of jet fuel.
Delta Air Lines will buy Northwest Airlines in the United States for more than -billion under a proposal unveiled on Monday to create the world’s biggest airline, as carriers seek to counter skyrocketing fuel prices and a weak economy. US airlines are hoping mergers could lead to higher fares as combined carriers reduce flights.
American Airlines cancelled 1 094 flights, or nearly half its schedule, on Wednesday to reinspect aircraft, a disruption that affected about 100 000 passengers and triggered chaos at the busiest United States airports. The airline said it also expected more than 900 cancellations on Thursday.

South African Airways (SAA) is facing two new challenges: One in its regional market and another on its United States routes. United States airline Delta will start a new non-stop service between Cape Town and New York on June 4. Delta reports passenger loads of more than 80%.
