The searing cultural drama Babel and the uplifting musical Dreamgirls won the top Golden Globe awards on Monday, making them instant front-runners in Hollywood’s Oscar race. Dreamgirls, which follows the rise of three women singers and closely resembles the ascendancy of all-girl groups like The Supremes, won three awards.
Another Ali is going to fight in Africa. Nearly 32 years after Muhammad Ali knocked out George Foreman in the ”Rumble in the Jungle”, his daughter, Laila, plans to fight this summer in Cape Town, South Africa. ”There’s a lot of love for Ali in South Africa,” she said on Friday. ”I’m following in my dad’s footsteps.”

The disputed Palestinian film Paradise Now, the tale of two childhood friends who volunteer to be suicide bombers, was nominated on Tuesday for a best foreign language Oscar. The film, by director Hanny Abu-Assad, is competing against, among others, the South African crime drama Tsotsi, by Gavin Hood.

Gay cowboy romance Brokeback Mountain and Johnny Cash biopic Walk the Line grabbed top honours on Monday at the Golden Globe awards, giving both a major boost in the coming Oscar race. South African film Tsotsi and South African actress Charlize Theron went home empty-handed, though.
Hundreds of pieces of Elvis Presley memorabilia were auctioned off over the weekend by a longtime collector trying to win back his girlfriend after she warned him, ”You leave the Elvis clothes or I’ll leave you.” Items auctioned in Beverly Hills included three Elvis concert suits, two of which sold for 000 and 000.
