Sharks stay on course for play-offs

The Sharks collected a crucial five points to keep alive their hopes of reaching the Super 14 semifinals with a 33-14 win over the Cheetahs on Saturday. The Sharks scored two late tries by winger Odwa Ndungane for the bonus point to ensure they remain in contention for a last-four place with just one round of matches to come.

Stormers easy winners against Cheetahs

The Stormers ran out comfortable 34-22 winners over the Cheetahs in a Super 14 fixture at Newlands on Saturday. A great kick-off by Stormers flyhalf Peter Grant set up the platform for the team’s opening try in the second minute. Grant’s kick went into touch 5m from the Cheetahs’ try line.

Brumbies survive late fightback to beat Cheetahs

The ACT Brumbies overcame a crippling injury toll to beat the Cheetahs 29-23 in the Super 14 in Canberra on Friday. The Brumbies survived a late fightback from the visitors to chalk up their third win of the season while earning a valuable bonus point to stay in contention for a place in the finals nearing the halfway stage of the competition.

Crusaders a class above the Cheetahs

The unbeaten Canterbury Crusaders showed their depth of quality when they made sweeping changes to the side but still beat the Central Cheetahs 55-7 in Super 14 rugby in Christchurch on Saturday. In a nine-try rampage the Crusaders took maximum points to remain firmly embedded at the top of the table.

Chiefs run down tiring Cheetahs

New Zealand’s Waikato Chiefs staged a brilliant second-half comeback to beat South Africa’s Cheetahs 22-20 in a Super 14 match at Hamilton on Saturday. The Cheetahs looked to have the game sewn up when they raced to a 17-0 lead at half-time, but the Chiefs suddenly turned things around.

Giteau guides Western Force to close win

Matt Giteau scored all his team’s points — including a penalty goal in the fourth minute after the final whistle — to lead the Western Force over the Cheetahs 16-15 on Friday. The Cheetahs could have won with a penalty in the 80th minute, but a miss by replacement flyhalf Conrad Barnard led to a final series of attacks by the Force.

Rookie coach Drotske spoilt for choice

Cheetahs coach Naka Drotske, in announcing his side to play the Sharks in a warm-up match in Bloemfontein on Friday night, has admitted that he was still undecided on a number of positions. Springbok Meyer Bosman gets the nod at inside centre ahead of Herkie Kruger, and former Bull Jacques-Louis Potgieter is preferred to Conrad Barnard at flyhalf.

Elephants trample Eagles in George

In a shock result in a Currie Cup first-division game at Outeniqua Park in George on Saturday, the Eastern Province Mighty Elephants sprang a surprise when they defeated the Eagles 34-17. In Wellington, Griquas beat the Boland Cavaliers 57-22, and the Lions outplayed the Valke 61-30 in Johannesburg.

Bulls, Western Province on course in Currie Cup

The Blue Bulls look on course to fight until the end for a home semifinal berth after they ran over Griquas 46-3 in their Currie Cup encounter at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria on Saturday afternoon. In Cape Town, Western Province kept their Currie Cup semifinal hopes alive when they thrashed the Boland Cavaliers 62-10 at Newlands.
