The United Nations World Food Programme on Wednesday condemned the killing of three of its truck drivers in the violence-stricken western Sudanese region of Darfur. Fighting has erupted between the only Darfur rebel group to have signed a 2006 peace accord and Sudanese troops, the United Nations said on Wednesday after the rebels accused Khartoum of attacking a town the rebels control. The United Nations said that exchanges of fire took place on between the Sudan Liberation Army faction of Minni Minawi and the Sudanese army.

The gunmen made Mohammed Aadam lie with his face in the dirt while his sister was being raped. He had been sitting in his hut that morning, playing cards with friends, when the Janjaweed attacked. ”The Janjaweed were shooting and people from the village were running into the forest,” said Aadam, aged 23.
On a shallow slope between two hills of orange rock and sand, a man’s body lies curled in a foetal position. His hands are thrown up as if to protect his face from the bullet that punched a hole in his temple. A few feet away on the bare slope, another man’s body lies between two youths. His arms are stretched out to the two younger ones, as if he was embracing them at the moment of death.
