America’s execution chambers fell idle on Wednesday after the Supreme Court made it clear it will allow no more prisoners to be put to death until it reviews the legality of the lethal injection. Death penalty campaigners on Wednesday said they expected the informal moratorium to last at least until next summer.

A month after the United States Supreme Court agreed to wade into the lethal injection debate, executions are effectively on hold across the nation as courts and politicians sit tight. On September 25, the country’s highest court agreed to examine whether lethal injections are ”cruel and unusual” punishment.

Rwanda joined other countries on Friday in appealing for a global moratorium on executions, saying that if its government could abolish the death penalty while perpetrators of the 1994 genocide still await sentences, no country should use it. About 500 000 people, mostly ethnic Tutsis, were massacred in 100 days of frenzied killing led by radical Hutus.
