Hurricane Noel on Friday churned over the Atlantic Ocean on a northerly track to Canada after battering the Caribbean where it killed at least 122 people in the Dominican Republic and Haiti. It is expected to slam into Nova Scotia over the weekend still packing powerful winds, but no longer bearing the characteristics of a tropical cyclone.

Resort tycoon Howard ”Butch” Kerzner was killed along with three others when the helicopter in which they were traveling crashed into a building on the Dominican Republic’s north coast, an aviation official said. The helicopter carrying Kerzner, chief executive officer of Kerzner International, went down at 2.15pm (6.15pm GMT) on Wednesday in the popular tourist resort of Sosua.

Tropical Storm Jeanne crept toward the Bahamas, drenching the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico with rains that killed three people and carved out a path of destruction marked by damaged homes, flooding and toppled trees. Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Karl has formed in the far eastern Atlantic.

Dominican soldiers searched for more flood victims on Wednesday, burying corpses quickly and explaining to families that not all bodies could wait to be identified. At least 363 were dead and hundreds were still missing. ”The victims we find will be buried where they are,” said a Civil Defence officer.
Frantic relatives dug through the mud for loved ones as a makeshift morgue filled up with 100 corpses in rains that devoured a Dominican Republic village on the Haitian border. Radio stations reported on Tuesday at least 60 people were dead on the Haitian side.
