Safina too strong for Hingis

Dinara Safina made it fourth time lucky when she overcame top seed Martina Hingis to clinch the Australian Women’s Hardcourt tennis championship 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 on Saturday. The 20-year-old Russian has participated in the tournament since 2004 and her best result until this year was a semifinal appearance in 2006.

Smith ready to roar in tri-series, says Arthur

South African cricket coach Mickey Arthur believes out-of-form captain Graeme Smith is ready to show his true form in the upcoming limited-overs series with Australia and Sri Lanka. Smith failed to deliver during South Africa’s three-Test series loss to Australia, scoring just 155 at an average of 25,83 as his team went down 2-0.

Hingis makes winning return from retirement

Martina Hingis made a successful return to competitive tennis on Monday after a three-year absence, beating Maria Vento-Kabchi of Venezuela 6-2, 6-1 at the Australian women’s hardcourt championships. The 25-year-old Hingis, winner of five Grand Slam singles titles, made a nervous start when both players exchanged service breaks.
