Persian Gulf countries may enlist South African expertise in their plans to develop nuclear technology for peaceful purposes, Kuwait’s Foreign Minister said on Tuesday. Mohamed Sabah al-Salem al-Sabah was speaking after talks in Cape Town with his South African counterpart, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma.

Leaders of the Gulf Cooperation Council, wary of the repercussions of Iran’s nuclear programme, opened a two-day summit on Monday at which they were joined by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Saudi Arabia has signalled that it will not attend the Middle East peace conference scheduled by the United States for this month unless there is significant agreement in advance on the core issues that divide Israelis and Palestinians. Prince Saud al-Faisal, the Foreign Minister, also held out a vision of normalisation between the Arab world and Israel.
