Masetlha hoax-email case postponed in court

The alleged fraud case against former National Intelligence Agency (NIA) director general Billy Masetlha and his two co-accused was postponed in the Pretoria Commercial Crimes Court on Monday. The charges relate to alleged hoax emails implicating senior African National Congress members in a conspiracy against Jacob Zuma.

Billy Masetlha acquitted

Former spy boss Billy Masetlha was on Wednesday found not to have contravened the Intelligence Oversight Act by the Hatfield Community Court in Pretoria. His acquittal on charges of withholding information from Inspector General of Intelligence Zolile Ngcakani was greeted by loud applause from the public gallery.

Masetlha ‘had no political ambitions’

Witness corroborates Masetlha testimony

One of the witnesses recalled in the case of former spy boss Billy Masetlha on Friday corroborated evidence that the inspector general of intelligence was sent a report — which he had asked for — on September 30 2005. Although Masetlha’s former personal assistant Nokuthula Motshwane could not be in court, she gave evidence through an affidavit.

Masetlha accused of being inconsistent in testifying

Former spy boss Billy Masetlha was on Wednesday accused of not being consistent in testifying in the Hatfield Community Court. Prosecutor Matric Luphondo said Masetlha gave different versions of when a report requested by Inspector General of Intelligence Zolile Ngcakani was compiled. Masetlha is charged with contravening the Intelligence Services Oversight Act.

Former spy boss Billy Masetlha said he found it amusing that the inspector general of intelligence kept asking for a report that had been sent to him several times, the Hatfield Community Court heard on Monday. Testifying under cross-examination, Masetlha said repeated requests from the inspector general for information ”took him aback”.

Court told of ANC ‘counter-revolution’

Former director general of the National Intelligence Agency Billy Masetlha has implicated Intelligence Minister Ronnie Kasrils in a ”counter-revolution” meant to destroy the African National Congress (ANC). ANC secretary general Kgalema Motlanthe had said that certain things happening in the party bordered on ”counter-revolution”, Masetlha testified on Wednesday.

Masetlha magistrate denies application for recusal

Magistrate Dreyer van der Merwe on Tuesday denied an application from former spy boss Billy Masetlha’s defence team for his recusal from the case at the Hatfield Community Court in Pretoria. ”The facts presented by the defence are not substantiated to merit a recusal,” the magistrate said after deliberating over the application for about two hours.
