AfriForum and Aksie Potchefstroom would challenge the name change of Potchefstroom to Tlokwe in court, the civil movements said on Thursday. Spokesperson Theo Venter said AfriForum and Aksie Potchefstroom had opened a case against a member of the executive council, Howard Yawa, and the city council regarding the name change.
The Southern District municipality in the North West would be named after the former Zambian president Dr Kenneth Kaunda, the municipality said on Tuesday. The council passed a resolution on the new name at its meeting on Monday, mayor Boitumelo Moloi said.

Some Potchefstroom residents are intent on resorting to legal action if the city’s name changes continue, Action Potchefstroom said on Wednesday. A residents’ meeting approved a decision that the North West minister of developmental, local government and housing, Howard Yawa, be challenged in court.
