Immelman faces first test as Masters champion

South Africa’s Trevor Immelman puts his credentials as US Masters champion to their first test in the Byron Nelson Championship from Thursday. Immelman will be looking to wrest the title from Texan Scott Verplank, who had an emotional victory at his hometown event last year shortly after his mentor, Nelson, had passed away.

Golf great Byron Nelson dead at 94

Byron Nelson, who had the greatest year in the history of professional golf when he won 18 tournaments in 1945, including a record 11 in a row, died on Tuesday. He was 94. His death was confirmed by the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office. No cause of death was listed on its website.

‘Byron has still got Tiger’

Tiger Woods had finished in the money for 142 consecutive United States PGA Tour events until missing the cut in Texas at the Byron Nelson Championship, but in a real sense the event’s namesake golf legend never lost that record. Only 111 of Woods’s events during his impressive run that ended on Friday actually had a cut.

Thrilled Purdy takes first PGA title

Ted Purdy won the first title of his United States PGA career, firing a five-under par 65 in Texas on Sunday to win the Byron Nelson Championship and deny Vijay Singh a return to the world number-one ranking. Purdy began the week 116th on this year’s US PGA money list and 173rd in the rankings.

Els looks to get on track in US

Ernie Els looks as though he belongs with the other stars at the Byron Nelson Championship. The Big Easy is part of the ”Big Four”. The top four players in the world ranking are past champions at Lord Byron’s tournament, and all have three wins this year. Els just hasn’t done it on the PGA Tour.
