South African journalist Mark Klusener has been arrested in Jerusalem by Israeli police, the Foreign Affairs Department said on Monday. ”A South African journalist, Mark Klusener, was arrested along with seven other media workers, according to the South African embassy in Tel Aviv,” said department spokesperson Ronnie Mamoepa.

Israeli police were on a heightened state of alert on Tuesday a day after Palestinian militants carried out the first suicide attack in the Jewish state in a year. ”Our forces have been placed on a heightened state of alert as we fear a wave of terrorist attacks after Monday’s attack in Dimona,” Bertie Ohayon, a senior police officer, told public radio.

At least one person has been killed in a suicide bomb attack in southern Israel on Monday — the first inside the country for a year. Firefighters told radio stations that at least one person had died in the blast, which happened in the commercial district of the southern town of Dimona.

Israeli police said on Thursday there was insufficient evidence to indict Prime Minister Ehud Olmert in a graft case, a major boost for the premier as he returned home from a United Sates peace conference. ”There is insufficient evidence to indict Prime Minister Ehud Olmert in the Bank Leumi case,” police spokesperson Micky Rosenfeld said.
