General Motors South Africa is "relieved" that the two-week-old strike in the motor-component industry has ended. Several South African motor manufacturers were badly affected by the strike, which forced them to shut down production facilities due to a lack of parts. The strike ended on Tuesday evening.

The strike in the motor-components industry is expected to come to an end on Tuesday evening when a wage agreement between the National Union of Metalworkers’ of South Africa and the Retail Motor Industry (RMI) will be signed. An RMI spokesperson said the strike will end when the two parties sign an agreement in Randburg.

Talks to end a strike that has halted production at South Africa’s major car-manufacturing plants will continue on Saturday, Retail Motor Industry executive director Jakkie Olivier said on Friday. Workers in the motor-components industry went on strike on September 12 over wages.

Talks to end the motor-components industry strike were to resume at 6pm on Thursday, the Retail Motor Industry’s (RMI) spokesperson Jakkie Olivier said. ”We made good progress on Wednesday and we’re set to begin talking at 6pm this evening. I think an agreement is imminent,” he said.

Talks to resolve the wage dispute between the National Union of Metal Workers of South Africa and employers in the motor industry were under way on Friday, the union said. Spokesperson Mziwakhe Hlangani said: ”They are in talks as we speak … there are no new developments yet, it’s better to speak a bit later.”
