About 142 xenophobic cases before SA courts

About 142 court cases linked to xenophobic violence have been opened countrywide, the National Prosecuting Authority said on Tuesday. Spokesperson Tlali Tlali said 102 of these were in Gauteng. Provincial police liaison officers approached said none of the 142 cases had reached the conviction stage yet.

Locked gates faced pensioners in burning home

Locked security gates and the immobility of some residents as well as a suspected electrical fault all possibly contributed to the 12 deaths in a blaze on Tuesday night at one wing of a KwaZulu-Natal old-age home. One of those who managed to escape from the home is believed to be a 99-year-old woman.
