Laughing excitedly, dozens of children on Tuesday filled a new park in Bramfischerville, Soweto, which was opened by Johannesburg City Parks and the district municipality to mark World Earth Day 2008. Johannesburg City Parks has also planted more than 15 000 trees in Meadowlands and Bramfischerville.
Johannesburg’s metro police have deployed 34 officers to help police by-laws in Johannesburg’s parks, cemeteries and open spaces, City Parks said on Tuesday. They will work with 30 park wardens already policing the areas, as well as community policing forums and the South African Police Service.

Three people died and a number were injured during a fierce storm in Johannesburg on Thursday, paramedics and emergency officials said. Netcare 911 spokesperson Nick Dollman said a young man was killed and two people injured by a large tree that fell over in Perth Road in Auckland Park during the storm.
