Hosts Ghana scored three times in the last 20 minutes to beat Côte d’Ivoire 4-2 to finish third in the Africa Cup of Nations on Saturday. Boubacar Sanogo, making his first start of the tournament, scored twice in nine minutes to give Côte d’Ivoire a 2-1 half-time lead.

Senegal and South Africa were eliminated from the African Nations Cup after a 1-1 draw in their last Group D match in Kumasi on Thursday. Both teams needed a win to revive slim hopes of reaching the last eight but finished behind Tunisia and Angola in the standings.

Senegal have imposed a media blackout after the publication of a story in the local press about skipper El-Hadji Diouf staying up late at a nightclub 48 hours before a crunch Africa Cup of Nations Group D tie against South Africa. ”We want to be focused on the match and do not want any distractions from the media,” said an official.

Defending champion Egypt beat Sudan 3-0 on Saturday to move closer to a quarterfinal berth at the Africa Cup of Nations. Hosni Abd Rabou scored first from the penalty spot in the 28th minute after he was fouled in the area by Sudan goalkeeper Elmuiz Abdalla.

Samuel Eto’o equalled the Africa Cup of Nations goalscoring record as Cameroon restored their reputation with a comfortable 5-1 win over Zambia in their Group C match at Kumasi’s Baba Yaro stadium on Saturday. Eto’o converted a 66th-minute penalty to register his 14th goal in five tournaments, matching a 38-year-old record set by Laurent Pokou of Côte d’Ivoire.

Mohamed Zidan scored two spectacular goals in the first half on Tuesday to lead defending champion Egypt to a 4-2 win over shaky Cameroon.
