Inter Milan, FC Barcelona, AS Roma and Sevilla all advanced to the second round of the Champions League on Tuesday. Inter, Sevilla and Roma advanced with wins, while a point against Lyon was enough for Barcelona. The four teams join Arsenal and Manchester United in the next round.

Brazil came from behind to beat Uruguay 2-1 in a World Cup qualifier on Wednesday but were upstaged by Paraguay and Ecuador, who both went on scoring sprees. Luis Fabiano scored both goals as Brazil overcame their smaller neighbours in São Paulo on a night when they were heavily indebted to goalkeeper Julio Cesar.

Real Madrid hit four goals in a devastating first-half spell as they stormed to a 5-1 away win over Valencia at the Mestalla on Wednesday. A second-minute strike from Raul, a Ruud van Nistelrooy double and a superb shot from defender Sergio Ramos put Bernd Schuster’s side 4-0 up after just 37 minutes while Robinho added a classy fifth midway through the second half.

Arsenal and Manchester United moved closer to a place in the next round of the Champions League on Tuesday with big wins that extended the English duo’s perfect starts. Arsenal beat visiting Slavia Prague 7-0 to equal the competition’s biggest win, while English champion United won at Dynamo Kiev 4-2.
