Microsoft is negotiating to buy a stake in social networking site Facebook that could value the company at -billion or more, the Wall Street Journal reported on Monday. The report said that Microsoft is keen to buy a 5% stake in the company, but is facing competition from Google.

Sony said on Thursday that it is bringing the rumble feature back with a new PlayStation 3 (PS3) controller, but there was no mention of any price cut for the console. The head of Sony Computer Entertainment, Kazuo Hirai, said that 40 new PS3 software titles will be released by the end of the year.

A European Union court upheld most of a landmark 2004 European Commission antitrust decision against Microsoft on Monday in a crucial victory for the European competition regulator against the United States software giant. The EU’s Court of First Instance dismissed Microsoft’s appeal on all substantive points.

Microsoft released four software patches on Tuesday to fix security flaws, including one that could allow hackers to take over computers running the company’s instant messaging programs. Only one of the flaws carried the company’s most severe ”critical” rating, and it only applies to the Windows 2000 operating system.

The head of Microsoft’s gaming business in Japan promised more role-playing game software on Wednesday to attract fans in a market where its Xbox 360 console has struggled against offerings from Nintendo and Sony. Takashi Sensui, who heads Xbox operations in Japan, said Japanese prefer role-playing games.

Seven developing countries in Africa and Asia will be the first to take part in a new global health campaign aimed at directing aid more effectively at the basic needs of poor countries. Health ministers from Burundi, Ethiopia, Kenya, Mozambique, Zambia, Cambodia and Nepal will take part in the launch of the initiative at British Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s office later on Wednesday.

Microsoft says it will release a major package of updates and fixes for the Windows Vista operating system in the first half of 2008. The company says a ”beta” test version of Service Pack 1 will be released ”in a few weeks to a moderate-sized audience”. The pack fixes some common problems that cause computers to crash or freeze.

Internet search leader Google has begun hosting material produced by the Associated Press and three other news services on its own website instead of only sending readers to other destinations. The change that started last Friday affects hundreds of stories and photographs distributed each day.

Sony says it will start selling a combined television tuner and personal video recorder that lets users of the PlayStation 3 (PS3) console capture live television that can be stored or transferred to the PlayStation Portable (PSP) for later viewing. Yahoo! has introduced new features for its popular web-based email program, including software that allows computer users to type text messages on a keyboard and send them directly to someone’s cellphone. The enhancements make it easier to send email, instant messages or SMSs from a single website.
Microsoft will send out replacement parts for its Xbox 360 Wireless Racing Wheel after 50 reports that the video-game controllers overheated and released smoke when plugged in, the software maker said last week. The steering-wheel-shaped controllers mimic the physical sensations of race-car driving.
