Strict action will be taken against those who ”manipulate” the price of bread, the government warned on Tuesday. It was gravely concerned about rising bread prices, which inevitably affected the poor, the Ministry of Agriculture and Land Affairs said in a statement.

Government ministers have changed their minds about referring the forensic report on the affairs of the Land Bank to the police. According to Cabinet spokesperson Themba Maseko, they did so after hearing that a number of board members and senior executives of the bank had challenged statements in the report.

R1-billion was ”looted” from the Land Bank, the Ministry of Agriculture and Land Affairs said on Wednesday. ”The amounts reported as ‘looted’ in the weekend newspapers are inaccurate,” said ministry spokesperson Godfrey Mdhluli. The Sunday Times reported that top Land Bank officials had siphoned off more than R2-billion meant for farmers.

A government report blamed constant power failures for a drastic drop in wheat production, the official media reported Sunday. A two thirds shortfall in wheat harvests was expected to worsen chronic bread shortages. Most bakeries were closed during the past week as flour deliveries dried up.
