Pakistan missile strike kills 12 in new violence

Twelve suspected militants were killed by a missile strike in Pakistan’s troubled tribal belt, hours after gunmen held 300 children hostage at a nearby school, officials said on Tuesday. Separately, a Pakistani soldier was killed and five others injured in the latest clashes between security forces and Islamist insurgents in the lawless borderlands with Afghanistan.

Pakistan fighting kills 250 as civilians flee

Pakistani jets pounded militant hideouts near a troubled tribal town for the third day on Tuesday as officials said about 250 people had died in some of the heaviest clashes since 2001. The fighting has forced thousands to flee from Mir Ali, a town that President Pervez Musharraf has previously pinpointed as a den of Osama bin Laden’s al-Qaeda network.

Fifty Pakistan soldiers missing after clashes

About 50 Pakistani troops are missing in a tribal area bordering Afghanistan after fierce battles with Islamic militants that have already claimed 80 lives, the army said on Monday. The soldiers have been out of radio contact since early on Monday in rugged North Waziristan, where the United States says Osama bin Laden’s al-Qaeda network is regrouping.

Dozens of insurgents killed by Pakistan army

Pakistani helicopter gunships and artillery pounded pro-Taliban militant hide-outs in a tribal region near the Afghan border, killing up to 40 insurgents, the army said on Wednesday. Hours earlier, dozens of Islamist fighters attacked a check post and kidnapped 12 troops a few kilometres away in the country’s north-west.

Musharraf rules out emergency over attacks

Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf on Wednesday ruled out declaring an emergency in an effort to stem a tide of militant attacks that have killed more than 130 people this month. In the lastest violence, militants killed 17 soldiers in the North Waziristan region a day after a suicide bomber killed 16 people in the capital.

Missile attack kills militants in Pakistan

A missile attack killed at least 17 pro-Taliban militants and wounded 10 in a Pakistani tribal region near the Afghan border on Tuesday, according to independent television news channels. The blast occurred at a militant training camp near Datta Khel district, about 60km west of Miranshah, the main town in North Waziristan.

Top al-Qaeda operative believed killed

A top al-Qaeda operative indicted for the 1998 United States embassy bombings in Africa was the target of a Pakistani military strike and is believed to have been killed, a security official said on Thursday. The raid is believed to have killed Egyptian-born explosives expert Abdul Rahman al-Muhajir and seven other militants.
