Awards will be bestowed on a musician, a judge and a former chief of state of protocol, Billy Modise, during next week’s 11th national orders ceremony. Modise, United States musician and singer Harry Belafonte and Chief Justice Pius Langa are just some of those who will be recognised at the ceremony.

In this most weird and wonderful Rugby World Cup, England is making it seem like anything is possible. That includes winning the final against South Africa on Saturday at Stade de France, a prospect that was utterly absurd little more than a month ago.

Sport stars, poets and scientists shared the spotlight at a National Orders awards ceremony in Pretoria on Friday. President Thabo Mbeki bestowed South Africa’s highest awards on 20 recipients. Among those receiving awards were Morne du Plessis, Sam Ramsamy, Roland Schoeman, Elisabeth Eybers and Wally Serote.

The 2007 Rugby World Cup kicked off in France on Friday night, filling the Cup stadium in Paris with colour and movement in a somewhat bizarre ceremony that was shorter and much less grandiose than those of soccer and the Olympics. Thousands of spectators watched as drummers surrounded the field and beat out loud rhythms on big, red oil drums as planes flew past trailing red and blue smoke.

Australia beat England at the 1991 Rugby World Cup final, but in the South Stand at Twickenham lurked a couple of fellows who held up a banner emblazoned with this motto: ”South Africa, the real World Champions”. As it turned out, the blazers of the International Rugby Board had met during the second World Cup to debate the re-entry of the Springboks into the international fold.
