The Transnet National Ports Authority’s failure to act in Saldanha Bay could saddle it with costs
Power cuts are hitting Transnet’s service, its chief executive, Maria Ramos, announced in Johannesburg on Wednesday. The power cuts are a problem, particularly as far as the company’s expansion projects are concerned, she said. ”We were affected and we are from time to time affected by the power issues — like everybody else.”
The South African Police Service’s explosives unit confirmed on Wednesday that an uncleared Chinese vessel docked at the outer anchorage of Durban harbour was carrying arms. Leonard Hadebe, head of Durban customs, said: ”We have confirmed that the shipment was headed for Zimbabwe.”

The National Port Authority (NPA) says it can contain any oil spillages in Saldanha Bay harbour, dismissing claims by environmentalists that it did not have an adequate plan or enough equipment in place. The NPA criticised a weekend media report that said Saldanha Bay faced a potential catastrophe from oil spills.

Firefighters battled for more than four hours on Tuesday evening to control a blaze at Durban’s Island View chemical storage depot. The inferno erupted when three tanks containing highly flammable chemicals exploded at 7pm. Hundreds of residents on the Bluff flocked to view the flames shooting high into the night sky.

Durban’s Island View oil depot was ablaze on Tuesday night after three tanks exploded. Hundreds of residents on the Bluff flocked to various streets and points to view flames shooting high into the night sky. A Bluff resident, Ivan Raimbault, said there was an explosion at about 7pm. Ten minutes later the second tank blew. The third one exploded five minutes later.
