A magnitude 5,6 earthquake struck in a rural area about 15km north-east of San Jose, California, Silicon Valley’s biggest city, on Tuesday night, causing minor damage. The earthquake was felt across the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond just before 3.05am GMT on Wednesday.

Environmentalist lawyers are threatening to sue Apple in 60 days if the iconic United States company doesn’t make iPhones greener or warn buyers of toxins in the devices. The Centre for Environmental Health sent Apple notice on Monday after Greenpeace released a scientific analysis of how Earth-friendly iPhones are.
A day after one of the most travelled sections of freeway in the San Francisco Bay area melted and collapsed following a fiery crash, residents on Monday began what could be their worst commute in almost two decades. ”I’ve never seen anything like it,” said officer Trent Cross, of the California Highway Patrol.

Rain fell for an eighth straight day around the waterlogged United States North-East on Friday, pushing people from their homes in the middle of the night and leaving train tracks littered with fallen trees. Flood warnings covered parts of Connecticut, New York and New Jersey.
