Robala ka khotso

The death of the youngest and most short-lived of the rain queens, Makobo Modjadji, this week has thrown the Balobedu nation into mourning. Mathole Motshekga, former Gauteng premier and legal adviser to the royal family, says the question of Queen Makobo’s daughter succeeding her has not yet arisen. A new queen will be chosen after a spiritual ceremony has been completed.

The world, the text and Edward Said

On his death in the morning of Thursday September 25 Edward Said was Professor of English and comparative literature at Columbia University in New York. Said was a towering figure in a number of fields: in literary criticism, cultural studies and Middle East studies, specifically the question of Palestine.

Such was Rusty Bernstein, the Rivonia trialist who died this week. He was a powerful intellect, analytically perhaps without equal, and a writer of great talent.

A straight shooter

Steve Hilton-Barber, who died of a heart attack at age 39 last week, was one of the most adventurous of South Africa’s younger generation of photographers. His work ranged from news photography to portraiture, wildlife, music photography and commercial work.
