An armed robber was convicted on Tuesday of the murders of a fellow gang member and a businessman who shot each other during a R20 000 robbery in Pietermaritzburg. Judge Ron McLaren convicted Cato Ridge gangster John Ndawonde (35) — who pleaded guilty to the aggravated robbery of well-known vintner De Wet Joubert (64).

Investigations into more than 500 000 social-welfare grants in KwaZulu-Natal have saved the taxpayer close to R520-million that would have been lost to corruption, KwaZulu-Natal Premier S’bu Ndebele said on Wednesday, delivering his State of the Province address in Pietermaritzburg.

Widespread media attention over the health risks associated with paddling the Hansa Powerade Dusi Canoe Marathon has resulted in the appointment of a consultant to oversee actions to be taken in order to make the race safer for canoeists. A 21-year-old gangster was jailed for life by the Pietermaritzburg High Court on Friday for murder and sentenced to nine terms of 25 years for nine aggravated robberies. Mzamiseni Mazibuko had previously been sentenced to 30 years’ jail in March this year for nine other aggravated robberies.

The fifth man arrested for the murder of historian David Rattray was sentenced to 25 years’ imprisonment in the Pietermaritzburg High Court on Friday morning. Zwelihle Mtshali (21) pleaded guilty to one count of murder and one count of attempted robbery with aggravating circumstances.

A 38-year-old businessman was arrested in Durban on Thursday for allegedly failing to pay R43-million in value-added tax (VAT) to the South African Revenue Service (Sars). Properties, cash in bank accounts and vehicles in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng — valued at R90 million — were seized in dawn raids.
A Pietermaritzburg man (34) who raped his eight-year-old daughter was told by a judge on Wednesday that he failed to understand what possessed the man to commit such a callous act. Judge Herbert Msimang imposed a 20-year jail sentence on the man.
A Greytown farm worker was convicted of murder on Thursday after telling the Pietermaritzburg High Court that he hacked two woman co-workers to death with an axe last week, robbed them then burnt their bodies. The Zulu royal household budget is R36,4-million for this financial year, an increase of R6-million over the previous year. The Pietermaritzburg High Court on Wednesday rejected moves by predominantly Afrikaans parents of Newcastle High School to retain the Christian form of religious worship. The chairperson of the school governing body, Dr Prithipaul Ramkissoon, said in court papers that the school’s religious policy is intolerant of religions other than Christianity.

A South African convicted of the murder of Anglo-Zulu war expert David Rattray was sentenced on Monday to 25 years in prison. Rattray, a friend of Britain’s Prince Charles and famous for his lively oral accounts of fighting between British troops and Zulu warriors in the 19th century, was shot dead on January 26.

Maritzburg United pushed AmaZulu FC deep into the relegation zone when they beat them 2-0 in a Castle Premiership game played before a capacity crowd at Princess Magogo Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
