Cement producer PPC on Wednesday admitted that it was involved in market-sharing arrangements with other cement producers.
The Competition Commission on Wednesday raided the premises of cement producers in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal, it disclosed on Thursday.
PPC on Thursday advised that the Competition Commission had conducted a search-and-seizure operation at the premises of major cement manufacturers.
Africa’s biggest cement maker, Pretoria Portland Cement, said on Tuesday regional industry cement sales fell 9,7% in the five months to February.

SA cement manufacturer PPC on Monday reported an 8% rise to 283 cents in its headline earnings per share for the year ended September 2008.
SA cement producer PPC will sell a 15% stake worth R2,7-billion to black investors to meet government requirements on black ownership, it says.
Cement maker PPC increased first-half headline earnings per share by 16% as infrastructure and affordable housing projects drove cement demand, the company said on Wednesday. PPC reported headline EPS of 126 cents and a 9% increase in operating profit to R1,077-billion.
The JSE was looking lifeless at midday on Tuesday, as there was no real driver to push the market in either direction, traders said. By 11.59am, the JSE’s broader all-share index had shed 0,1%. The gold mining index dropped 3,14%, resources fell 1,48% and the platinum mining index declined 0,55%.
Commodity counters and positive Dow futures kept the JSE firm by midday on Thursday, with platinum counters leading the gains, traders said. At noon, the JSE’s broader all-share index was up 1%. The platinum mining index advanced 2,89%, resources climbed 1,89% and the gold mining index was up 1,59%.

Africa’s biggest cement maker PPC on Tuesday posted a 16% rise in full-year headline earnings per share and forecast a healthy performance this fiscal year, as demand for building materials booms. PPC reported headline EPS of 263 cents and a 19% rise in revenue to R5,6-billion.

The JSE was steady at midday on Wednesday, unmoved by the release of local CPI and CPIX data which was in line with market expectations. By noon, the JSE’s all-share index had collected 0,52% as the gold-mining index advanced 1,22%. The platinum-mining index added 0,95% and financials climbed 0,68%.

The JSE had given up most of its early gains by midday on Tuesday, but was still in positive territory as resources and the platinum mining index tried to lift the local bourse. By noon, the JSE’s all-share index had added 0,18%. The platinum mining index had firmed 1,93% and resources rose 0,69%.
The JSE was off its earlier lows by midday on Wednesday as investors looked for value after the recent sharp sell-off. After starting weaker on the back of a sharp fall on Wall Street overnight, the JSE was looking a little better late morning. The Dow shed 2% on Tuesday and Tokyo shares ended down 1,7%, but London shares have turned around.
