Elephants trample Guinea into dust

Côte d’Ivoire overwhelmed Guinea in the closing stages to triumph 5-0 in an Africa Cup of Nations Cup quarterfinal on Sunday and equal the record winning margin for the tournament. Next up for Côte d’Ivoire are either defending champions Egypt or dark horses Angola in the semifinals on Thursday.

Côte d’Ivoire ready for quarterfinals

Côte d’Ivoire are the favourites to go one step better than two years ago and win the Africa Cup of Nations. Chelsea striker Didier Drogba captained the Elephants to three straight wins in a tough Group B that included Nigeria, Mali and Benin. They next play Guinea in the quarterfinals on Sunday in Sekondi.

Ghana, Guinea through to last eight

Hosts Ghana beat Morocco 2-0 to reach the Africa Cup of Nations quarterfinals on Monday as the tournament claimed its first coaching victim with Henryk Kasperczak quitting Senegal. Guinea also went into the last eight, following Ghana through from Group A despite managing only a 1-1 draw against rank outsiders Namibia.

Feindouno ban hits Guinea hard

Guinea go into their must-win African Nations Cup game against Namibia on Monday rocked by star player Pascal Feindouno’s two-match ban. Namibia’s own build-up has been overshadowed to this make or break Group A match by the players’ claims they were offered  000 each to throw the game.

Ghana coach says team can reach knockout phase

Coach Claude le Roy is convinced hosts Ghana will reach the 2008 African Nations Cup quarterfinals after being drawn in Group A with Guinea, Morocco and Namibia. ”I realise expectations are high among Ghanaians and we will surely go through to the knockout phase,” the widely travelled Frenchman told local journalists.
