As President Thabo Mbeki delivered his State of the Nation address in Parliament on Friday, ordinary South Africans told the Mail & Guardian Online they were concerned about crime and unemployment, but didn’t expect the government to get to grips with these problems.

This is how I came to fall in love with a homeless person. My friend Sabelo has a mighty mane of dreadlocks and an ego so large he can barely get his Rasta shirt on, but he’s a friend and he knows things. We’re at the Apartheid Museum where Sabelo comes to flirt with hot foreign girls, writes Lev David.
A man was arrested in Rosebank, Johannesburg, on Monday after spreading petrol in his room in a building inhabited by squatters and setting it alight. The fire in the abandoned building along Jellico Road in Rosebank was being extinguished by fire-fighters on Monday evening.

A man in a clerical habit abused me in the church hall of the Johannesburg parish of the Immaculate Conception in Sturdee Avenue, Rosebank. It happened after a children’s Christmas party — and my abuser was a Catholic cleric. My uncle, Cardinal Owen McCann, was the archbishop of Cape Town at the time. His position as president of the South African Catholic Bishops’ Conference was not enough to deter my abuser.

An alleged robber was shot and killed and a man was in a serious condition after shots were fired during a robbery in Rosebank on Tuesday. Netcare 911 spokesperson Nick Dollman said the shooting happened at about 12.30pm near the corner of Jan Smuts Avenue and Bolton Road.

Young and old braved the cold and rainy weather in Johannesburg on Friday to gather singing and screaming outside Sasol’s head office in Rosebank to cheer the World Cup-winning Springboks on their victory parade. Hundreds of fans waited patiently in the rain for a glimpse of the Webb Ellis trophy.

SA Rugby has confirmed details of the Springboks’ victory tour, starting on Friday, to honour the team’s World Cup-winning performance in France. South African Rugby Union president Oregan Hoskins has appealed to the public to join in the celebrations by wearing green and gold.
One year into the construction of railways of South Africa’s first partly underground express train, the focus is on the completion of routes that are crucial for the 2010 Soccer World Cup. Transport Minister Jeff Radebe visited the sites of the Johannesburg and Rosebank rail tracks and stations on Wednesday.
