Mining magnate Brett Kebble was assassinated, one of his business partners said on Wednesday. Andile Nkuhlu was one of a group of people expecting Kebble for dinner on Tuesday night. Kebble was shot dead on his way there. "This was pure assassination. There is no doubt about it," Nkuhlu said.

Six police officers at the Booysens police station in southern Johannesburg have been arrested on charges of corruption and assault, police said on Wednesday. This follows a recent television exposé.
Minister of Defence Mosiuoa Lekota and KwaZulu-Natal Premier Sibusiso Ndebele are taking the <i>City Press</i> newspaper to court over an article that alleged they were apartheid spies. "This is after the <i>City Press</i> newspaper refused to apologise and retract in full its report of August 7 2005," Lekota said on Monday evening.
The case against four men accused of raping a Belgian pupil was weakened after a newspaper published their pictures before an identity parade could be held. The four have so far refused to subject themselves to a line-up because the <i>Daily Sun</i> newspaper published photos of them after the incident.
The officer investigating the case against Donovan Moodley — who was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of student Leigh Matthews — will investigate the possible involvement of others in the crime. Superintendent Piet Byleveldt said although the case against Moodley (25) was closed, there were certain aspects of it that could still be probed.
The Freedom Front Plus says it is to lay a charge of fraud against Imvume Management, the company involved in the so-called Oilgate scandal, on Monday. "If you ask for money for a specific purpose and you use that money for something else, that would constitute fraud," a party spokesperson said on Sunday.
The <i>Mail & Guardian</i> on Friday challenged the public protector to a public debate on its report into the Oilgate saga, which the newspaper called "rather meaningless". Earlier in the day, Public Protector Lawrence Mushwana said at the release of the report that he found no evidence of wrongdoing in the scandal.

Explosions rocked the London subway and a double-decker bus on Thursday, causing at least two deaths, injuring scores of riders and sending victims fleeing from blast sites. British Prime Minister Tony Blair called the explosions a "series of terrorist attacks". A group calling itself "The Secret Organisation of al-Qaeda in Europe" has claimed responsibility for the blasts in a web statement, reports said.
South Africans in London spoke to the <i>Mail & Guardian Online</i> immediately after Thursday’s series of blasts that hit the city’s underground railway system and a double-decker bus, describing the chaos and confusion that ensued as news of the explosions spread through the city.
The Johannesburg Organised Crime Unit is investigating the theft of R1-million worth of electronic equipment from the offices of the <i>Mail & Guardian</i> on Saturday night. About ten men armed with rifles tied-up guards at the newspaper’s premises and then loaded about 40 almost-new Apple computers into a vehicle and fled the office park in Milpark, Johannesburg.
The Johannesburg High Court banned the M&G from running a follow-up article that Imvume Management paid R11-million of taxpayers’ money to the ANC.
The retail price of petrol in South Africa is set to rise by 20 cents per litre (c/l) across all grades of petrol from Wednesday May 4, the Department of Minerals and Energy said on Thursday. The increase means that the price of inland 93 grade petrol will rise from R5,02 to R5,22, and to R5,11 a litre at the coast.

Forty MPs are to be prosecuted for their role in Parliament’s travel scam, the Scorpions announced on Friday. "After considering the evidence and consulting with the affected parties, we have decided to prosecute certain members of Parliament in this matter," spokesperson Sipho Ngwema said.

Colin Powell has resigned as American Secretary of State, the department said on Monday. Powell (67), a former general, submitted his resignation to President George Bush on Friday, a senior department official said. The White House will announce the resignations of four members of Bush’s Cabinet on Monday, a spokesperson said.

The national broadsheet <i>ThisDay</i> did not appear on Tuesday morning. <i>ThisDay</i> editor Justice Malala called the newspaper’s staff together after 6pm on Monday and told them that the publication would not be on the streets on Tuesday. Staff members were to meet later on Tuesday to be informed about their future.

Drag queens are most welcome at Johannesburg’s 15th Gay Pride march next weekend, despite media rumours to the contrary, the organisers said on Friday. Metro police had earlier in the week said that drag queens would be prevented from marching, because it is illegal to disguise one’s appearance at a public gathering.
The family of Paul Meintjes of Hertzogville, whose resurrection was predicted by a "prophet" after his death about five weeks ago, has not yet made arrangements to remove the body from the town’s mortuary, mortician Nico Foulds said on Thursday. Meintjes’s body has been kept frozen in the town’s mortuary since July 1.
Eleven people have been arrested in connection with violence that erupted in Diepsloot when residents were protesting their removal to Brits near Pretoria, police said on Monday. Earlier on Monday residents of the area burnt two city council buildings in protest at their removal to Brits "without any reason".

Four South Africans were injured and one was killed in a car bomb in Baghdad in Iraq on Wednesday morning, the Department of Foreign Affairs said. Departmental spokesperson Nomfanelo Kota said three of the injured men were treated for minor lacerations and the fourth one sustained serious injuries.
