Taliban militants stormed Kabul’s leading luxury hotel on Monday night, killing seven people in a significant escalation of insurgent tactics against foreign civilians in Afghanistan. The Norwegian Foreign Minister, Jonas Gahr Stoere, and other guests fled into the basement of the five-star Serena hotel.

Pollution at the Vaal River has reached crisis proportions, an environmental scientist said on Tuesday. Claudia Holgate described the sewerage spillage running into the Vaal River as ”a crisis” at a meeting of Save the Vaal Environment held at the Vaal River Barrage Reservoir.

Economic crisis, hunger and the impact of Aids are pushing Zimbabwean children as young as seven to risk exploitation and walk alone or in small groups into South Africa, aid group Save the Children said on Wednesday. Hungry, tired and often orphaned, the children come in hope of food, work or schooling.
