Controversial Soweto school principal Jackie Maarohanye, also known as ”Mama Jackie”, was found guilty of kidnapping a former student by the Protea Magistrate’s Court on Monday, Johannesburg police said. ”The case was postponed to January 21 for sentencing,” said police spokesperson Constable Sefako Xaba.

The University of Johannesburg’s (UJ) Doornfontein and Auckland Park Bunting Road campuses remained shut on Wednesday after student protest action at the university this week. UJ spokesperson Sonja Cronje said there were about 10 to 15 protesters toyi-toying outside the main gates of the Doornfontein campus.
Four people were injured and 38 students arrested during protests by University of Johannesburg students on Tuesday. Police spokesperson Constable Sefako Xaba said police were guarding the institution because the management had an interim interdict to prevent the disruption of academic activities.
A 31-year-old woman was hit by a rubber bullet fired by police outside the Robin Crest residence in Saratonga Avenue, Johannesburg, during a student protest on Tuesday. Margaret Titsi and her sister were crossing the street at traffic lights when police demanded that they clear the road.
Hundreds of University of Johannesburg students were protesting on their campuses on Monday morning, Gauteng police confirmed. Police spokesperson Constable Sefako Xaba said police had been called to the campus on Bunting Road where about 200 students had gathered.
