”An awful lot” needs to be done before mid-December when financial closure is expected to be reached between stakeholders of the Gautrain project, local construction partner Murray & Roberts said on Tuesday. The executive director of the company, Arnold Miller, said there was nonetheless no reason to suppose that financial closure could not be reached.

A member of the Gauteng legislature, the Freedom Front Plus’s Jaco Mulder, on Tuesday made a second attempt to buy "blacks-only" Eyethu shares from Nedbank. In a statement, Mulder — who is his party’s provincial leader — said he officially handed in his application to his Nedbank branch in Krugersdorp for his Eyethu shares.

South Africa on Monday denied that it proposed taking part in any uranium-enrichment activities in Iran, saying it had been ”actively involved in seeking a diplomatic solution regarding the peaceful uses of nuclear energy by Iran”. ”The report … is erroneous and without any foundation,” the Department of Foreign Affairs said.

The Bombela Consortium is under no legal obligation to complete the Gautrain before the 2010 Soccer World Cup starts, Business Day reported on Tuesday. A woman was stung to death by a swarm of bees that attacked her when her car hit an electric substation in Senderwood on Monday afternoon, Johannesburg metro police said. A massive beehive covering the roof of the substation was disturbed when Mariana Carmichael’s car veered off the road and hit the building.

A prison official is in a critical condition after being shot in a failed escape bid from Zonderwater prison on Sunday. Five prisoners took five officials hostage at the prison’s hospital wing on Sunday. The men were serving a variety of lengthy sentences for murder, armed robbery and possession of arms and ammunition.
