Will the Gautrain be late?

”An awful lot” needs to be done before mid-December when financial closure is expected to be reached between stakeholders of the Gautrain project, local construction partner Murray & Roberts said on Tuesday. The executive director of the company, Arnold Miller, said there was nonetheless no reason to suppose that financial closure could not be reached.

Drought still grips many parts of SA

South Africans should use water sparingly due to the drought in many parts of the country, Minister of Water Affairs and Forestry Buyelwa Sonjica said on Tuesday. Indications from the South African Weather Service are that prospects for above-normal rainfall this season are not good.

SA denies nuclear involvement in Iran

South Africa on Monday denied that it proposed taking part in any uranium-enrichment activities in Iran, saying it had been ”actively involved in seeking a diplomatic solution regarding the peaceful uses of nuclear energy by Iran”. ”The report … is erroneous and without any foundation,” the Department of Foreign Affairs said.

Car-crash victim stung to death by bees

A woman was stung to death by a swarm of bees that attacked her when her car hit an electric substation in Senderwood on Monday afternoon, Johannesburg metro police said. A massive beehive covering the roof of the substation was disturbed when Mariana Carmichael’s car veered off the road and hit the building.

Scorpions may return Zuma documents

The Scorpions will have to return documents taken from former deputy president Jacob Zuma’s Johannesburg home in August, the Witness website reported on Tuesday. It said this was clear from a sworn statement by Scorpions chief advocate Leonard McCarthy that was handed in at the Durban High Court.

Tip-off prevents robbery at Rosebank mall

A tip-off that led to the discovery of a stolen vehicle and four automatic rifles with 400 rounds of ammunition has prevented a major robbery at an upmarket Johannesburg shopping mall. Superintendent Chris Wilken said the police’s North West unit received a tip-off around 2pm on Sunday about a planned robbery at the Rosebank shopping mall.

The ombudsman for banking services has warned internet banking clients to make sure they enter the right account numbers for beneficiaries before making payments. This is after a dissatisfied online banking customer complained that money was wrongly paid to a beneficiary after he had entered eight digits instead of nine for an account number.

The township of Khutsong was quiet on Monday, with a march and stayaway planned for Friday as the next item on the protest calendar, the South African Communist Party said.
