The township of Khutsong was quiet on Monday, with a march and stayaway planned for Friday as the next item on the protest calendar, the South African Communist Party said.
The township outside Carletonville was the scene of protests last week over residents’ dissatisfaction with proposals to transfer the Merafong municipality, which includes Carletonville, from Gauteng to the North West province.
”It’s quiet today but we shall be marching on Friday,” said local SACP spokesperson Jomo Mogale.
At the weekend, protesters said it had been agreed that the SACP would organise the march to the office of Carletonville mayor, Des van Rooyen.
The weekend also saw looting in Khutsong.
Meanwhile, a number of Khutsong residents were expected to appear in court on Monday following last week’s protests that involved about 6 000 people. — Sapa
