Springbok coach Jake White on Monday congratulated the Sharks and the Bulls on their achievement of reaching the semifinals of the Vodacom Super 14 competition. White said the South African franchises’ cooperation with SA Rugby on the conditioning strategy of the national team has benefited rugby in the country immensely.

Rodrigues guilty of baby’s murder

Dina Rodrigues did not flinch on Monday as a Cape High Court judge on Monday pronounced her and her four co-accused guilty of the murder of baby Jordan-Leigh Norton. She stared straight ahead as Judge Basheer Waglay said that even though she only planned the June 2005 killing, she was as guilty as the men she hired to carry it out.

AU to send 8 000 troops to Somalia

The African Union announced on Monday it would send an extra 8 000 peacekeepers to Somalia but said dialogue remained the only solution to the bloody conflict in that country. "The crisis in that country has so far proved intractable. The AU has decided to send 8 000 troops immediately to assist peacekeeping efforts," AU chairperson John Kufuor said.

Fanteni sends Ajax to cup of dreams

Thembinkosi ”Terror” Fanteni scored in the 52nd minute to earn a victory for Ajax Cape Town against their city rivals Santos in an Absa Cup semifinal clash played at the Athlone Stadium on Sunday. Ajax left-back Brett Evans swung a corner kick to the far post which Dominic Isaacs headed towards goal and which Fanteni cheekily flicked into the back of the net.

Angry words over new names in South Africa

South Africa’s drive to abolish colonial and apartheid-era place names has met resistance in parts of the black community, where activists accuse the ruling African National Congress of honouring only its own heroes. Thousands of demonstrators thronged the streets of Durban on May Day to protest proposals to rename close to 200 buildings, roads and other landmarks.

Zille named as new DA leader

Cape Town mayor Helen Zille was on Sunday elected as the new leader of the Democratic Alliance (DA). The announcement was made by DA leader Tony Leon to over a thousand delegates at the party’s federal congress in Gauteng. She beat two other contenders for the position, Eastern Cape leader Athol Trollip and federal chairperson Joe Seremane.

DA to raise new Oilgate questions

The Democratic Alliance (DA) said on Monday it would table new questions in Parliament aimed at establishing who was ultimately responsible for the Oilgate scandal. This follows a report that African National Congress (ANC) funder Sandi Majali had threatened to ”spill the beans” about the transfer of R11-million to the ANC.

Nominees announced for SA cricket awards

AB De Villiers, Andrew Hall, Jacques Kallis and Shaun Pollock have been nominated for the Standard Bank one-day international cricketer of the year award to be announced on Wednesday. The Proteas nominated Mark Boucher, Shaun Pollock and Ashwell Prince for the South African players’ player of the year award, while the fans’ vote went to AB De Villiers, Makhaya Ntini and Shaun Pollock.

Judgement in Jordan murder trial postponed to Monday

Judgement in the baby Jordan murder trial in the Cape High Court was adjourned to Monday after Judge Basheer Waglay reached page 82 during his reading of the 150-page document. In the dock is Dina Rodrigues and four accomplices — Sipho Mfazwe, Mongezi Bobotyane, Zanethemba Gwada, and Bonginkosi Sigenu — accused of the murder of baby Jordan-Leigh Norton in June 2005.

Woolmer cremated after private ceremony

Murdered Pakistan coach Bob Woolmer, whose death shocked the cricket world, was cremated on Friday after a private family ceremony near Cape Town. Woolmer (58) was murdered on March 18 in mysterious circumstances shortly after Pakistan were eliminated from the World Cup following a shock defeat by Ireland.

Teacher unions reject govt pay increase

Teacher unions on Friday rejected the government’s pay-increase offer of 6%. National Professional Teachers’ Organisation of South Africa president Dave Balt said that following a meeting with government representatives on Thursday night the union refused the offer. ”We have made our position very clear as to what our demands are, and the employer has not taken us seriously.”
