Irish brickies win praise for Cape housing project

A community of shack dwellers in the dusty Cape Town township of Mfuleni gathered on Monday to thank a group of Irish volunteers building brick homes to replace their corrugated iron ones. A group of around 350 volunteers are in Africa’s southernmost city this week to help build 50 houses in Mfuleni as part of a larger project to build 720 houses.

No further arrests for Kebble murder

No further arrests have been made in connection with the murder of mining magnate Brett Kebble, police said on Tuesday. Police spokesperson Director Sally de Beer said she could not say whether there had been any new developments in the case since the arrest last week of Glenn Agliotti.

Mo Shaik: There is interest in Schabir’s shares

Buyers are slowly lining up for Schabir Shaik’s shares in African Defence Systems, but no decision has been made on who will have first shot at what are often viewed as the crown jewels in the crumbling Nkobi empire. Mo Shaik, the brother of the convicted Durban businessman, said on Monday that ”there are various interested parties”, but he would not disclose who they were.

Assets seized from trucking-fraud suspects

Assets have been seized from three people arrested in connection with a R25-million trucking scam, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said on Monday. ”Assets seized by the asset forfeiture unit include property, three vehicles, a boat [rubber duck] with carriage, a 9mm firearm and three bank accounts,” said NPA spokesperson Lucinda Moonieya.

SA signs trade agreement with Oman

Trade and Industry Minister Mandisi Mpahlwa and his counterpart from Oman, Bin Ali Sultan Maqbool, signed a trade and technical cooperation agreement in Pretoria on Monday. Mpahlwa said the economic growth currently being experienced by South Africa allowed for many more partners and that Oman should be one of them.

Metro police chief shot at workers, says union

Embattled Ekurhuleni metro police chief Robert McBride shot at protesting municipal employees who were calling for him to be suspended, the South African Municipal Workers’ Union (Samwu) alleged on Monday. ”He was the first one to shoot at workers,” said Samwu’s East Rand branch secretary Koena Ramatlou of McBride after the protests.

The presidential task team on African traditional medicines has been compromised by the inclusion of Professor Herbert Vilakazi and advocate Christine Qunta, the Democratic Alliance (DA) said on Monday. The Department of Education has expanded the number of schools that will not be charging school fees by 40% for next year. ”Funding is available and this will be implemented. Zimbabwe submitted its first human rights report in eight years to the African Commission on Human and People’s Rights, ZimOnline reported on Monday. It said the document apparently entailed a vehement denial of human rights violations. Zimbabwe had, since 1998, failed to comply with a charter requiring members to submit yearly human rights reports.

About 30 000 people had braved the elements, hoping to see some action. It was overcast in the morning, but rain started falling just before the toss at two o’clock, and the covers were brought on.

Further Travelgate fraud amounting to R19-million was blocked from being investigated months before he was fired, Parliament’s former chief finance officer Harry Charlton has said, the Sunday Tribune reported. Man arrested for carrying human head in luggage

A 24-year-old man was arrested in Butterworth for carrying a human head in his luggage at a bus rank in the Eastern Cape on Saturday, police said. Captain Jackson Manatha said the man was arrested around 11am after a tip-off. The man had already been on a bus when police found him and was taken to the police station where a human finger was found in his pocket.
