A march by gender activists in protest at the African National Congress (ANC) Women’s League nominations of mostly men for the party’s top six positions would take place this week. Chief executive of the Gender and Media Southern Africa network Kubi Rama on Tuesday said the women would participate in the march on Wednesday.

Hip-hop MC and TV presenter Ashley Titus (36) — better known as Mr Fat — died on Wednesday morning in Cape Town’s Groote Schuur Hospital of natural causes, the pay-TV music channel MK said. In the 1990s, Titus shot to fame as MC with Cape Flats hip-hop sensation Brasse vannie Kaap.

The police are obliged to investigate fraud and corruption charges against Scorpions boss Gerrie Nel if a criminal complaint has been brought, the Institute for Security Studies (ISS) said on Friday. This would be necessary, even if the complaint was the latest salvo in the police’s ongoing spat with the Scorpions, said senior researcher Jake Moloi.

United States astronomers have discovered the biggest black hole orbiting a star 1,8-million light-years from Earth in the constellation Cassiopeia, with a record-setting mass of 24 to 33 times that of our Sun, Nasa said on Tuesday. The massive newcomer beats the previous stellar-mass black hole discovered on October 17 in the M33 galaxy that has 16 times the mass of our Sun.

The Ministry of Land Affairs would not give reasons for the termination of the contract of Director General (DG) Glen Thomas until the minister returned from a trip to Namibia, a spokesperson said on Tuesday. Clinton Nassif’s lawyer has refused to confirm ”dramatic new details” about his role in the September 2005 death of his boss, mining magnate Brett Kebble, supposedly contained in a draft affidavit leaked to the media on Wednesday. The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Gauteng on Wednesday criticised Health Minister Manto Tshabalala-Msimang for threatening to take action against nurses who placed babies in a cardboard box at Chris Hani-Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto, the party said. Former security chief of the late Brett Kebble, Clinton Nassif, is expected to enter into a plea bargain agreement on Wednesday with the Scorpions after he was arrested in a drug-dealing case. Nassif was added to the list of accused in a drug case that includes Kebble murder-accused Glenn Agliotti, and four others.

Convicted paedophile Gordon Joubert was given a collective jail sentence of 192 years in the Johannesburg High Court on Thursday, the Star newspaper reported. After his conviction earlier, Joubert suggested to the court the appropriate sentence for him was to be castrated, but the judge ruled otherwise.
Telephone bills and furniture were prioritised over hospital equipment at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, the national and provincial health departments said on Thursday. In a joint statement, the departments cited ”deficiencies on the management side” as the reason the hospital did not have required equipment.
