China wants the G20 summit to make progress against global financial turmoil, the country’s foreign minister said on Saturday.
China’s foreign minister warned other countries on Saturday not to let the Dalai Lama use their territory to try to sever Tibet from Chinese control.
China urged the United States to understand the true nature of the Dalai Lama clique — which it blames for stirring up last month’s violence in Tibet — and support China’s ”just position”, state media said on Thursday. China blames Tibet’s exiled spiritual leader, whom it labels a separatist, for stirring up the Lhasa violence.
Taiwan’s opposition Nationalist Party’s (KMT) presidential candidate, Ma Ying-jeou, has won more than half the vote in Saturday’s election, the party said, auguring improved ties with diplomatic rival China. Ma had won more than seven million votes, the party said, more than half the total 13-million people who cast their ballot.
China admitted for the first time that security forces shot at Tibetan protesters, as the military on Friday pursued its crackdown on volatile areas amid fears of mass arrests. The admission comes with Beijing’s Communist rulers trying to put the country’s best face forward in the run-up to the Olympic Games in August.
Tibet authorities said on Thursday they had arrested dozens of people involved in a wave of anti-Chinese violence and prompted Beijing to pour in troops to crush further unrest. China’s response to last week’s violence has sparked international criticism and has clouded preparations for the Beijing Olympics.

President George Bush hosted the Dalai Lama on Tuesday despite China’s warning that US plans to honour the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader could damage relations between Beijing and Washington. Beijing has bitterly denounced plans for the Dalai Lama to receive the Congressional Gold Medal on Wednesday.
