SA eyes mutual benefits from China’s Africa push

South Africa, which will host China’s President Hu Jintao on Tuesday, sees mutual benefits flowing from Beijing’s push into Africa while being wary of being seen as a mere source for raw materials. Bush budget proposes billions for Iraq

President George Bush on Monday proposed more than -billion in new spending for the United States military — much of it for the Iraq war — in a budget that would curb domestic programmes from health to education. Bush also warned that even more spending for Iraq could be needed, as he unveiled a ,9-trillion budget certain to stoke anger among Democrats.

Child soldiers: ‘The situation is dire’

Child soldiers are still being recruited in at least 13 countries from Afghanistan to Uganda, 10 years after international guidelines were agreed to eradicate their use, a British-based charity said on Monday. Save the Children said hundreds of thousands of under-age soldiers are being forced to fight around the world despite guidelines laid down in the Cape Town Principles in 1997.

DA calls for minister to reveal electricity supply plan

Minister of Minerals and Energy Buyelwa Sonjica must tell South Africans what her department is doing to ensure that future electricity blackouts are averted, the Democratic Alliance (DA) said on Monday. ”She needs to step up and reveal what the plan is over the short [one year], medium and long term,” DA minerals and energy spokesperson Hendrik Schmidt said in statement.

Rare diamond found in Lesotho

Only months after the Letseng Mine in Lesotho discovered the world’s fifteenth-largest diamond another rare find has been unearthed at the mine. A 216-carat diamond — a white D-colour flawless stone with a small naturally formed plane — was sent to be sold in Antwerp last week, Gem Diamonds company and the Lesotho government said in a statement on Monday.

Mbeki gets backing from Business against Crime

Business against Crime (BAC) has come out in support of President Thabo Mbeki, saying no assertion has been made by the president that crime levels in the country are not high. ”In a specific meeting in August, there was no debate by the president that crime levels were high and he acknowledged the seriousness of crime,” BAC chief executive Siphiwe Nzimande said on Monday.

Report: Future of Cango Caves in jeopardy

The future of the Cango Caves in Oudtshoorn is in jeopardy because of uncertainty over who should run the tourist attraction, it was reported on Monday. Last week, caves manager Hein Gerstner told reporters the municipality is not interested in the caves and that the world-famous attraction is in danger of falling into disrepair.
