The Afrikanerbond (AB) will use its influence to strengthen the economy, the political and justice systems and broaden cultural links to improve the country for all its citizens, its board of directors said on Monday.
They met over the weekend to discuss the once-secretive organisation’s future.
In a statement on the outcome of the meeting, the AB said it wants to work towards improving the country for all South Africans, but is also looking at entrenching the Afrikaans-speaking community’s identity, language and culture.
The AB said that while it understands the need for affirmative action, it is concerned that young Afrikaans-speaking people, especially, are being disadvantaged by it.
It also plans a networking programme to try and lure back Afrikaans speaking youth with skills from beyond the country’s borders to apply their skills in South Africa. — Sapa
