Death as police, protesters clash in Guinea

Up to 11 people were killed in clashes in Guinea’s capital on Monday between police and protesters supporting a general strike aimed at ousting President Lansana Conte, a hospital doctor said. ”There are at least 100 injured. The number of dead can be estimated at 11,” a doctor at the Donka Hospital in Conakry, who asked not to be named, told the media.

ANC on crime: Let us not be spectators

The ruling African National Congress (ANC) on Monday affirmed its commitment to the fight against crime, poverty and unemployment in the country. Speaking to the media in the wake of the party’s national executive committee lekgotla (meeting), ANC spokesperson Smuts Ngonyama said there needs to be ”unity and purpose” in the fight against crime.

Pakistan defeat Proteas to level series

Determined batting by Younis Khan and Kamran Akmal steered Pakistan to a five-wicket victory in the second Test against South Africa on Monday to level the series at 1-1. Younis was 67 not out with Kamran Akmal on 57, the pair adding 99 for the unbroken sixth wicket to pull Pakistan out of trouble to reach the victory target of 191 just before tea on day four.

Car bombs kill 75 in crowded Baghdad market

Two simultaneous car bombs blasted a busy market in central Baghdad on Monday, killing at least 75 people in fresh violence that came as Iraqis awaited the start of a planned United States-backed offensive in the capital. After a relative lull in violence in the capital at the weekend, the car bombs exploded barely a second apart in a market for second-hand goods.

Cellphones banned at British Open

Spectators will be banned from taking cellphones to this year’s British Open at Carnoustie after complaints from players during the 2006 championship at Hoylake. ”We have so far resisted the call to ban mobile phones on the grounds that it may be an inconvenience to the public,” said director David Hill.

FF+ opposes resettlement plan

The Freedom Front Plus (FF+) intends opposing an African National Congress (ANC) plan for massive resettlement in Tshwane, it said on Monday. FF+ Tshwane councillor Cornelius Jansen van Rensburg claimed the ANC wants to build 212 000 low-cost houses on every council-owned park and piece of open land in Pretoria and Centurion in the next five years.

Shop workers set for wage increase

Workers who work for 27 hours or less per week in the wholesale and retail industry will get a 9,7% as from February 1, said the Department of Labour on Monday. ”These are just annual wage increases and will apply to all workers whether they are based in shops in urbanised, peri-urban or rural areas,” said department spokesperson Zolisa Singaba.
